Subduo — Privacy Policy
Last updated: 5 June 2026
Subduo is a browser extension that adds dual subtitles and hover-to-translate word lookups to Netflix and YouTube for language learners. This policy explains exactly what data Subduo handles and what it does not.
What Subduo accesses and why
- Subtitle text and hovered words (website content). On a
Netflix or YouTube watch page, Subduo reads the on-screen subtitle text to
display it, and sends subtitle lines (and any word you hover in source-only
mode) to Google's public translate endpoint
(
translate.googleapis.com) to be translated and shown back to you. This is the only data transmitted off your device, used solely to provide the translation feature you requested. - Your settings. Your language pair, subtitle mode, and
study options are saved locally with
chrome.storage. - A local translation cache. Translations are cached on your device so repeats are instant and work offline. This cache never leaves your device.
What Subduo does NOT do
- No personally identifiable information, authentication, financial, health, location, or browsing-history data.
- No recording of clicks, keystrokes, or mouse movement as data.
- No analytics or tracking of any kind.
- No selling or transferring of data for advertising or any purpose unrelated to translation.
- No use of data for creditworthiness or lending.
Third-party service
Subtitle text and hovered words are sent to Google Translate to be translated. Google's handling of that data is governed by Google's privacy policy. Subduo sends only the text to be translated and does not attach your identity to it.
Permissions
storage— save settings and cache translations locally.- Access to
netflix.comandyoutube.comwatch pages — read subtitle text and display the overlay. - Access to
translate.googleapis.com— fetch translations.
Data retention and removal
Settings and the translation cache live only on your device. Removing the extension deletes all of Subduo's locally stored data.
